Cloudflare Glitch Causes Global Website Outages

A number of prominent websites and online platforms, including social media site X, experienced interruptions on Tuesday following technical issues linked to internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare.

In a service status update, Cloudflare confirmed it was investigating "an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers" and assured users that further information would be shared as the situation develops.

The company stated: "Cloudflare is experiencing an internal service degradation. Some services may be intermittently impacted. We are focused on restoring service.

"We will update as we are able to remediate. More updates to follow shortly. We are seeing services recover, but customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts."

In Nigeria, several major news websites like PUNCH, Vanguard experienced downtime as the disruption unfolded.

Cloudflare, which handles critical backend functions such as security checks and traffic management for millions of websites, supports around 20 per cent of all global sites.

Although the full extent of Tuesday’s outage remains unclear, users also reported issues accessing other services, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

OpenAI acknowledged the difficulties and said it was investigating, but did not explicitly link the disruption to Cloudflare.

This latest incident comes just weeks after an outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) left more than 1,000 websites and applications offline, followed by service interruptions at Microsoft Azure.
