Indian cinema has lost one of its most enduring and versatile stars with the death of Dharmendra, the Bollywood actor celebrated for his effortless transitions between romance, comedy and action.
Dharmendra died on Monday in Mumbai at the age of 89, following a recent spell in hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media, describing the actor’s death as “the end of an era in Indian cinema” and praising him as “an iconic film personality” whose performances were distinct by “charm and depth.”
Across a career spanning more than six decades, Dharmendra appeared in over 250 films, becoming one of Bollywood’s most recognisable faces.
His run of action hits in the 1980s earned him the moniker “He-Man,” while his portrayal of Veeru in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay remains one of the most beloved roles in Indian film history.
Beyond acting, Dharmendra served as a member of parliament and received one of India’s highest civilian honours for his contribution to the arts.
He also ventured into film production, backing projects featuring his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol.
His final screen appearance will be in Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis (Twenty-One), scheduled for release next month.
