The Bayelsa State Government has embarked on a major redesign and rehabilitation of failed roads across Yenagoa as part of its ongoing urban renewal drive.
Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo made the announcement in Yenagoa during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Epie Kingdom Development Organization (EKDO).
Ewhrudjakpo said the government was committed to restoring all deteriorated internal roads to ease movement within the state capital.
According to him, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has already commenced repairs on several routes, including Saptex and Okaka roads, as well as damaged sections of the busy Mbiama–Yenagoa Road.
He added that the state was implementing a comprehensive engineering plan aimed at addressing structural faults, poor drainage and recurring flooding that have plagued parts of Yenagoa.
The Deputy Governor revealed some roads would require a full redesign due to low filling and decades of wear.
“Some of them require full redesign because their filling is too low. The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is already working on this.
“Although there are various needs competing for the state’s resources, I can assure you that we are going to work on all the bad internal roads in our state capital,” he said.
The Deputy Governor urged the EKDO to extend its role beyond organising the annual Epie Festival by contributing to governance and development issues affecting the Epie Kingdom and Bayelsa at large.
He also called on the organisation’s 17 constituent communities to work with security agencies to expose criminal elements and sustain peace in the state.
Earlier, EKDO President Dr Wisdom Albert appealed for government support in acquiring 50 plots of land across the Epie Creek to build a new palace for the Obenibe and a central arena for the annual Epie Festival.
He also requested increased job opportunities and political appointments for sons and daughters of the Epie Kingdom, alongside further intervention on Yenagoa’s failing roads.
