2027: Omokri Warns Nigerians Against Backing Obi After Kanu’s Life Sentence

Reno Omokri has warned Nigerians against supporting Peter Obi in the 2027 general election, claiming that a vote for the Labour Party (LP) figure would amount to endorsing a presidential pardon for Nnamdi Kanu, who was handed a life sentence on Thursday.

Omokri, a firm ally of President Bola Tinubu, issued the warning in a post on his X account shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on all terrorism charges filed by the Department of State Services.

In his post, he wrote: “If you vote for Peter Obi as either President or Vice President in 2027, you are automatically voting for a Presidential pardon for Nnamdi Kanu!

His remark has triggered widespread discussions online, with Nigerians weighing the political and legal implications of the IPOB leader's conviction and the wider effect on the South-East.

Meanwhile, Justice James Omotosho ordered that Kanu remain in protective custody following his sentencing.

The judge delivered the ruling after an hour-long judgment, during which he held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Omotosho said the court opted for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty after considering appeals for mercy.

He added that keeping the IPOB leader in Kuje Prison “may not be appropriate” and directed that he be held in any secure correctional facility across the country.

The court found that Kanu’s threats, killings and repeated sit-at-home orders in the South-East constituted acts of terrorism.

He also received additional sentences on counts three and seven, which will run concurrently.
