WhatsApp Could Soon Let You Chat Without Sharing Your Phone Number

WhatsApp is testing a new feature, "Username" that could change the way people connect on the platform.

Instead of giving out your phone number, you may soon be able to choose a unique username, similar to what’s already common on Telegram, Instagram, or X.

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp’s beta version, hinting at a big shift towards more privacy and flexibility.

For many users, especially those in large group chats or business communities, not having to reveal a personal number could be a welcome change. A simple username could be all that’s needed to start a conversation or join a group.

Screenshots from the test version show a new profile field labelled "Username," allowing users to pick a handle and keep their number hidden if they prefer.

However, the move also raises new questions as how WhatsApp will handle impersonation or people rushing to claim popular names. Reports suggest the company is working on verification tools to prevent abuse.

The feature is still in testing and hasn’t been officially launched. But if it rolls out, it could redefine how more than two billion people use WhatsApp, shifting it from a phone number-based service to something closer to a social platform.
