Sweden Sacks Coach Tomasson After WCQ Defeats

The Swedish Football Association has sacked national team coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following a string of poor results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Tomasson's sack, announced on Tuesday and effective immediately, comes after Sweden suffered three consecutive defeats without scoring, leaving them rooted to the bottom of Group B.

Our responsibility is to ensure the best possible conditions to reach the World Cup finals. There is still a chance to make the playoffs in March, and we must act now," said FA president Simon Åström.

Sweden’s latest setback came on Monday with a 1-0 home defeat to Kosovo in Gothenburg, where a goal from Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani sealed their fate.

Despite boasting a strong attacking duo of Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, the team has failed to find the net in their last three matches.

Tomasson, a former Denmark international and ex-forward for clubs including AC Milan, Feyenoord and Newcastle United, took charge of Sweden in February 2024.

The Swedish FA confirmed that the search for a new head coach "will begin immediately" as they look to salvage their World Cup campaign.
