The Super Eagles of Nigeria face a definitive moment in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign this Friday, as they take on Lesotho’s Crocodiles in a high-stakes match at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
With their tournament hopes hanging by a thread, nothing less than a victory will suffice for the Nigerian side.
The journey to this point has been a rollercoaster for the three-time African champions. A 1-1 draw with South Africa in September seemed to have all but ended their chances, threatening a second consecutive World Cup miss.
However, a dramatic off-field turn of events reignited their campaign. FIFA’s decision to award South Africa a forfeit loss for fielding an ineligible player tightened Group C, pulling Nigeria back within striking distance.
The Super Eagles now sit third with 11 points, just three behind group leaders Benin and South Africa, who both have 14 points. With only two matches remaining, the equation for Nigeria is simple but stern: they must win both their final games, starting with Friday’s encounter, and hope for favourable results elsewhere.
"We know what is at stake. The team is focused and understands the assignment. The support of every Nigerian will be crucial," team spokesperson said during Thursday's press conference.
The match, however, is far from a foregone conclusion. Lesotho, who are already out of contention, have proven to be a stubborn opponent for Nigeria in the past. In their previous meeting in Uyo during November 2023, the Crocodiles held the Super Eagles to a shocking 1-1 draw, a result that now looms large over this must-win fixture.
Head-to-head, Nigeria still holds the advantage with two wins in their last three encounters, but the memory of that frustrating draw will serve as a warning against complacency.
The Group C landscape remains intensely competitive. While Benin and South Africa lead, Rwanda is also level on 11 points with Nigeria, making every goal and every point critical. A slip-up in Polokwane could prove fatal for the Super Eagles' aspirations.
The crucial Matchday 9 clash kicks off at 6:00 pm local time (5:00 pm Nigerian time) on Friday, October 10, 2025. Fans can follow the action live on DStv’s SuperSport, SportyBet TV, and AfroSport.
