The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following an extensive screening session on Thursday.
Amupitan, a 58-year-old professor of Law, was confirmed after more than two hours of questioning by senators, who sought clarity on his plans to restore public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system and drive critical reforms within the commission.
Lawmakers quizzed him on issues ranging from electoral transparency to the independence of INEC in managing future polls.
His confirmation follows his nomination by President Bola Tinubu and subsequent endorsement by the National Council of State last week.
With this appointment, Amupitan becomes the sixth substantive chairman of INEC, taking over from Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure officially came to an end.
In his remarks during the screening, Amupitan pledged to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and strengthen institutional autonomy, assuring senators of his commitment to credible, technology-driven elections.
He is expected to assume office immediately, ahead of key off-cycle elections and preparations for the 2027 general polls.
