Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has honoured Super Falcons defender, Miracle Usani, with a N50 million cash reward.
Otu also gave her a plot of land in Calabar, and an appointment as the state’s Sports Ambassador following her contribution to Nigeria’s triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Governor made the announcement during a reception at the Government House in Calabar, describing Usani’s achievement as a source of pride to Cross River State, Nigeria, and the African continent.
He praised her determination, talent, and resilience, insisting that her success serves as an inspiration to young women across the state.
"Your courage and performance have brought honour to our state.
"You’ve shown that what a man can do, a woman can do—even better. You are a symbol of excellence and resilience," he said.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to revitalising the sports sector, the governor said sports had evolved beyond recreation into a tool for economic growth and youth development.
He urged young people to draw inspiration from Usani’s journey, adding that her story proves the future holds promise for talented youths.
Presenting the gifts, Governor Otu stated, "We have approved N50 million and a plot of land in Calabar for you. You are now on our VVIP protocol list and will serve as Sports Ambassador of Cross River State."
In her response, Usani, who plays for Edo Queens FC and was part of the Super Falcons’ victorious WAFCON campaign, thanked the governor and the people of Cross River.
She recalled her challenging rise in football, having to train with boys due to the absence of girls’ teams in her community.
"My journey wasn’t easy. I played football with boys because there were no female teams where I grew up.
"People discouraged me, but I remained focused. Today, I’m proud to represent Nigeria and Cross River on the world stage," she said.
Usani, who also featured at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, dedicated her success to God, her parents, and the people of Cross River State.
