Cristiano Ronaldo has become the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history after scoring twice for Portugal in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Hungary on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old forward netted his 40th and 41st qualifying goals, surpassing former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz, who held the previous record with 39 goals scored between 1998 and 2016.
Ronaldo drew Portugal level in the 22nd minute, finishing from a cross by Nelson Semedo.

He struck again shortly before half-time, converting a pass from Nuno Mendes to give Roberto MartÃnez’s side a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Portugal were on course to secure early qualification for next summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, but a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Dominik Szoboszlai denied them victory and prolonged their wait.
Despite the setback, Ronaldo’s milestone adds yet another achievement to his illustrious international career.
Already the world’s top men’s international scorer with 143 goals, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has made clear his ambition to feature in a sixth World Cup.
