Nwaebonyi: EFCC’s Efficiency Could Eradicate Corruption in Nigeria

Nigeria could achieve a total eradication of corruption in the public sector if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) maintains its current level of performance, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi has said.

Nwaebonyi, who serves as Vice Chairman of the South East Constitution Review Committee in the Senate, made the remark during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday.

He commended the EFCC Chairman and his team for what he described as a transformation of the anti-graft agency from a "media trial outfit" into one delivering measurable results.

"Before now, EFCC was more about media trials without much to show for it.

"But within these two years plus, the Commission has secured many convictions, proving that it is working.

"I believe that if this tempo continues, corruption will soon be completely eradicated from our public system," he said.

The senator also lauded the EFCC’s operational independence and called on the agency to maintain transparency by periodically updating Nigerians on high-profile investigations, including those that do not lead to prosecution.
