The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commissioned a new Naval Base at Ayakoro community in Bayelsa State.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, October 24, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said the project reflects the Commission’s commitment to enhancing security infrastructure and fostering partnerships that promote sustainable peace and progress.
According to Ogbuku, the Ayakoro Naval Base is more than just another development project, adding that it stands as a symbol of collaboration between the NDDC, the Nigerian Navy, and the Ayakoro community, which donated several hectares of land for the establishment of a future Navy School.
The new facility features a range of modern infrastructure, including a fully furnished administrative block, a fully furnished accommodation block,a fully equipped 40-man houseboat supported by two 100kva generators, and two gunboats, each powered by twin 200Hp Yamaha engines.
Others include, a newly built operational floating jetty, Toyota Hilux vehicle for operational mobility, and 60kva solar inverters installed in the administrative and accommodation blocks, as well as a 30kva solar backup system for the houseboat
NDDC's boss said the Naval Base would serve as a strategic boost to maritime security, ensuring safer waterways and improved socio-economic activities in the Niger Delta.
He added that beyond its security benefits, the facility would also act as a catalyst for community development.
"I commend the Nigerian Navy for their partnership and unwavering dedication to protecting our waterways, and I salute the people of Ayakoro for their generosity and vision.
"At NDDC, we remain steadfast in our resolve to build, empower, and secure the Niger Delta — one project, one community, one partnership at a time," he said.
