FIFA’s Kebbi Stadium Post Triggers Backlash

Global football governing body FIFA has come under fire in Nigeria after using an image of the Birnin Kebbi Stadium co-funded with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the banner on its official social media pages.

Round Reports learnt that the photo, which appeared on FIFA’s X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts on Saturday, showed the partially completed Birnin Kebbi Stadium, built under the FIFA Forward Programme aimed at developing grassroots football.

The image quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions from Nigerians who questioned the intent behind FIFA’s choice.

While the post was likely meant to announce ongoing infrastructure projects supported by the programme, many online users interpreted it as a subtle criticism of the NFF amid renewed allegations of financial mismanagement.

The controversy intensified after football analyst Chinedu Mobike, in a video posted on his verified Instagram account @c_mobike on October 23, accused the NFF of mishandling FIFA funds meant for local football infrastructure.

Mobike alleged that FIFA disbursed $1.2 million for two stadium projects in Kebbi and Ugborodo, Delta State, but that the funds have not translated into tangible results.

"Other countries used their FIFA Forward funds to build functioning facilities and promote grassroots football. In Nigeria, there’s nothing to show. The NFF should sit up," he said.

However, the NFF is yet to issue an official response to the allegations or to the growing public debate surrounding FIFA's post as of press time.
