Bayelsa APC Hopes Diri Will Join Ruling Party

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fueled speculation about his next move, with APC leaders hopeful he will join the ruling party.

Israel Sunny-Goli, a former member of the House of Representatives and senior APC chieftain in Bayelsa, said on Thursday that he and other party members are hopeful the governor will defect to the APC.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sunny-Goli said Governor Diri’s leadership style and development achievements align with the APC’s progressive agenda.

"We see a leader who is competent, capable, sincere, and ready to take the state to the next level. I can tell you, he will finish stronger than any governor that has come before him because of the projects we see on ground. That is why those of us in the APC are praying and hoping that, when he finally tells the world which party he’s going to, it will be the APC,"  Sunny-Goli said.

Sunny-Goli also revealed that he had voted for Governor Diri in the last Bayelsa governorship election despite being an APC member, citing the governor’s leadership qualities as his reason.

He dismissed speculation that Diri might join other opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or Labour Party (LP), arguing that those parties lack the stability and structure of the APC.

Governor Diri formally announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations but did not disclose the party he intended to join.

"After extensive consultations, today, October 15, 2025, I wish to notify you that, in keeping with the extant protocols, I, Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party," the governor said.

Political observers believe the governor’s next move could greatly reshape the Bayelsa political landscape ahead of forthcoming elections.
