Tension flared in Tarabu village, Kirikasamma Local Government Area (LGA) of Jigawa State, on Wednesday, when angry youths attacked government officials during the flag-off of a road construction project by Governor Umar Namadi Danmodi.
Top politicians, including the Chairman of Kirikasamma Local Government Council, Alhaji Muhammad Maji, and the member representing Guri/Kirikasamma/Birniwa Federal Constituency, Hon Abubakar Fulata, narrowly escaped being lynched as chaos erupted shortly after the ceremony.
Governor Namadi had earlier performed the official flag-off of a 23.4-kilometre road project linking Tarabu to Gafta as part of his citizens’ engagement activities.
However, the event turned violent when irate youths began pelting government vehicles, including those in the governor’s convoy, damaging several official cars and police patrol vans.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack was sparked by anger directed at Hon Fulata, whom the youths accused of neglecting his constituency and failing to deliver development projects, unlike his counterparts in neighbouring areas.
