The Bayelsa State Government has commenced the desilting of creeks and canals in Yenagoa and its environs as part of measures to curb perennial flooding and erosion ahead of this year’s rainy season.
Director General of the Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control, Surv. Omuso Wilson Omuso, stated on Friday that the exercise will begin downstream before moving upstream and to adjoining canals to ensure the free flow of water.
He cautioned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into canals and waterways, naming St. Peters and Obele canals, Goodnews canal by Azikoro Town, Akempai canal, and other critical locations as priority areas, warning that offenders would face sanctions.
The Directorate also advised residents not to erect structures along canal rights of way, noting that such practices contribute to flash flooding in neighbourhoods.
Omuso also showed displeasure over children and adults clustering around desilting sites, describing it as unsafe, while also condemning disruptions by some community youths who allegedly made unnecessary financial demands.
“For your safety, please stay away from ongoing desilting sites to avoid casualties,” he said, urging community leaders to caution youths against obstructing the exercise.
Furthermore, members of the public with complaints or inquiries were directed to the Directorate’s Secretariat beside Government House, Yenagoa.
