Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has congratulated the people of Malawi on the peaceful conduct of their recent general election, describing the outcome as a reflection of democratic maturity on the continent.
In a statement issued on Friday, Jonathan lauded Malawians for demonstrating resilience and commitment to democracy, adding that their collective will had strengthened the country’s political institutions.
He extended his felicitations to the President-elect, H.E. Peter Arthur Mutharika, on his electoral victory, while also commending the incumbent, President Lazarus Chakwera, for showing rare statesmanship by conceding defeat even before the official declaration of results.
He further urged the President-elect to be magnanimous in victory and to sustain a culture of tolerance and unity in the governance of the country.
Jonathan believed that the Malawian experience would inspire other African nations to uphold the sanctity of the ballot, accept outcomes gracefully, and always place national interest above personal or political ambition.
The statement read:
"Congratulations to the people of Malawi for the peaceful conduct of their recent election. The outcome of the Malawi election is a powerful testament to the resilience of its citizens and a reflection of the maturity of its political system.
"I extend my felicitations to the President-elect, H.E. Peter Arthur Mutharika, on his victory, and commend the incumbent, President Lazarus Chakwera, for his sportsmanship in conceding defeat even before the final results were announced.
"As Africans, our democracy endures when those we choose lead with integrity, humility, and respect for institutional processes.
"May this moment in Malawi inspire other nations to uphold the sanctity of the vote, to accept outcomes gracefully, and to always put the interests of the people above political ambition.
"Malawi’s example today is a beacon of hope and a lesson in democratic maturity for all of us.
"I urge the President-elect to be magnanimous in victory and to sustain this culture of political tolerance and unity even after the elections.
"-GEJ."
