INEC Introduces Online Self-Service Option for First-Time Voters

Nigeria's electoral commission has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks and will from next Wednesday allow first-time voters to register online from their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.

The Independent National Electoral Commission announced on Friday that the nationwide CVR exercise, which commenced on 18 August 2025 and was originally due to close on 10 July 2026, has been extended to Friday, 24 July 2026.

According to INEC, the extension follows a review of the exercise and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

The commission further revealed the extension was aimed at giving eligible Nigerians who are yet to register a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters ahead of future elections.

More importantly, INEC announced the introduction of a self-service online registration option for eligible first-time voters, accessible from Wednesday, 8 July 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org.

The platform will allow citizens to initiate and complete their registration, including biometric capture, using personal devices.

INEC revealed the system incorporates identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to preserve the accuracy and credibility of the voters' register.

The commission urged all eligible Nigerians yet to register to take advantage of the extended window and the new technology option.

"The self-service option will enable eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without having to physically visit an INEC office.

"The system incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks designed to preserve the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters," INEC said.
