Delta Police Demote Officers Caught Collecting POS Payment Inside Station

Two Delta State police officers have been demoted after being found guilty of extortion and misconduct following a viral video that showed them accepting money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.

The Command's Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the disciplinary outcome in a statement on Tuesday.

Edafe confirmed that Commissioner of Police CP Yemi Oyeniyi upheld the findings of an orderly room trial against Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of C Division, Asaba.

The officers were captured on video on 13 January 2026 receiving money via a POS terminal within the station.

They were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct under the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.

Oyeniyi warned that no officer was authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.

He stressed that the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations was strictly prohibited.

"Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action," he said.

The Commissioner described the punishment as a deterrent and urged officers across the command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for citizens' rights.

He also encouraged the public to continue reporting misconduct, assuring that complaints would be investigated and handled in accordance with the law.
