FG Rolls Out Free DISREP Meters to End Estimated Billing

DISREP prepaid electricity meter distributed under the Federal Government’s metering programme in Nigeria

Nigerians can now apply for free prepaid electricity meters under the Federal Government’s Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).

The scheme was implemented by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

BPE said the initiative, also supported by the World Bank, aims to ensure every household and business across the country is properly metered.

It added that a large consignment of meters has already been delivered to electricity distribution companies covering Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola for onward distribution to customers.

The government said the programme is designed to scrap estimated billing and allow consumers to pay only for the electricity they actually use.

Both the meter and its installation are free, warning that no payment should be demanded for either.

Each meter will carry the initials of the relevant distribution company and a unique DREP-PP1 LOT number to prevent transfer between Discos.

Consumers have been advised to visit their nearest electricity distribution company office to obtain a meter.
