The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) and three other officers following the death of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed the dismissal on Sunday, 3 May 2026, saying the officers will also face prosecution.
Recall that the incident involved 28-year-old Mene Ogidi and occurred on 26 April 2026.
Police said operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command had received intelligence that Ogidi was caught while allegedly trying to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
After the death of Ogidi drew public criticism online, ASP Nuhu Usman and members of his team were arrested and transferred to the Force headquarters for disciplinary action.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu approved their dismissal and prosecution last week.

The recommendation was sent to the Police Service Commission for ratification, in line with the procedure.
Reports added that the decision followed a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which investigated the case alongside other internal processes.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the IGP said the officer and his team were recommended for dismissal from the NPF.
According to the police panel, the officer "acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other existing regulations on the use of firearms."
The disciplinary committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found responsible.
"Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.
"No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences," he said.
