Abia Okays Accelerated Feasibility Study for Proposed Azumini Sea Port

Abia State governor meeting with China Harbour Engineering Company delegation on proposed Azumini sea port project

The Abia State government has approved an immediate feasibility study for the proposed Azumini-Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor, following talks with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited.

Governor Alex Otti said on Wednesday that he met with a delegation led by Nicolas Liu to discuss the project, which aims to connect Abia State to the high seas and strengthen its role in Nigeria’s maritime trade.

While the company initially proposed a six to seven-month timeframe for the study, the governor has directed that it be completed within a shorter period to accelerate progress.

Alongside the study, the state will begin the process of securing approvals from the Presidency, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE).

The governor has also encouraged the engineering team to visit the proposed site to assess its technical viability, particularly given its proximity to the sea and the dredging requirements involved.

Otti described the project as having the potential to transform Abia’s economy and contribute to Nigeria’s maritime development.

He stressed that strong commitment, adequate funding and strategic partnerships would be key to realising the port.

"I thank the team from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited for their presentation and look forward to positive outcomes from the feasibility study," he said.
