EFCC Raids Internet Fraud Academy in Abuja, Arrests 31 Suspects


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of 31 individuals in connection with an alleged internet fraud training centre uncovered in Becki Estate, Karu, Abuja.  

According to EFCC's statement on social media, the sting operation carried out on Thursday, 9 April 2026, led to the capture of two suspected kingpins alongside several interns who were reportedly undergoing tutorials in cybercrime techniques.  

Its investigators stated that the so-called academy lured young recruits from Benue State under the guise of legitimate job opportunities. 

Once inside the facility, the interns were stripped of their mobile phones, confined within the premises, and handed laptops, communication devices and specialised software to begin training in online fraud.  

Recovered items included 18 laptop computers, multiple mobile phones and other electronic gadgets.  

Reports further revealed that the academy enforced strict compliance by housing recruits on-site and subjecting them to corporal punishment.

Interns who resisted instructions allegedly faced physical assault as a means of discipline.  

The EFCC stated that the suspects will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.  

"To enforce compliance and dedication, the proprietors house the recruits in the academy and restrict their movements strictly within the perimeters of the facility and forcibly took possession of their mobile phones, thus totally cutting them off from the outside world.

"Furthermore, corporal punishment was the order of the day, with heavy-handed physical assault meted out to interns who were seen to be recalcitrant.

"The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded," the EFCC said.
