Twelve Nigerians Arrested in Ghana Cybercrime Raid

Twelve Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Ghana over alleged involvement in organised cybercrime and human trafficking, following a coordinated security operation in the country.

The arrests were carried out by a joint team drawn from the Ghana Police Service(GPS), its Cyber Vetting and Enforcement and CID Surveillance units, and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

According to security sources, the raid took place on Thursday, 12 March 2026, and was led by DSP Malaika Jibril Alhassan and Superintendent Francis Baidoo.

Officers recovered 25 laptops and seven mobile phones believed to have been used in a range of cyber-enabled crimes.

Investigators said the suspects attempted to obstruct the operation by releasing German Shepherd dogs at the officers, but reinforcements were swiftly deployed, allowing the arrests to be completed without serious incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were allegedly involved in internet fraud, identity theft, phishing and email scams, mobile money fraud, cyber extortion, credit card and ATM fraud, as well as electronic forgery.

Police said the alleged activities contravene several Ghanaian statutes, including laws governing cybersecurity, electronic transactions, criminal offences, data protection and immigration regulations.

The suspects, all nationals of Nigeria, are currently in custody and are expected to be formally charged as investigations continue.

Ghanaian authorities reiterated their commitment to tackling transnational cybercrime and protecting the country’s digital and financial systems.
