FIFA president Gianni Infantino has revealed that President Donald Trump has assured him Iran will be permitted to take part in the next World Cup in North America, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Infantino disclosed the development on Wednesday following talks with the US leader about preparations for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“The Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States,” Trump told Infantino during their discussions, according to a statement later shared by the FIFA chief on Instagram.
The remarks come against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical strains in the region, which have prompted speculation over whether certain nations might face restrictions in international sporting competitions.

Iran, a regular fixture at World Cups, has long been regarded as one of Asia’s strongest footballing sides.
Its participation in the 2026 edition would continue a tradition of appearances stretching back decades.
According to the organisers, preparations for the expanded tournament remain on schedule, with work under way to address logistics, security and the smooth inclusion of all qualified teams.
The event is expected to be the largest in FIFA’s history, with matches staged across three host countries.
