The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has elected new executives across its eight local government areas after party congresses held over the weekend.
Party officials announced the exercise, conducted at local government headquarters across the state, proceeded peacefully and relied largely on consensus arrangements to select new leaders.
Speaking at the congress in Ogbia Local Government Area on Saturday, the Bayelsa PDP caretaker chairman, George Turnah said the turnout of delegates demonstrated continued loyalty to the party, which he noted has historically produced key leaders at both state and national levels.
Turnah warned that the party was mobilising ahead of the 2027 Nigerian General Election and the state’s 2028 off-cycle governorship poll, insisting that those who defected to rival parties should expect a political challenge.
He cited what he described as the party’s long-standing influence in Bayelsa politics, pointing out that PDP members from the state had previously served in roles ranging from deputy governors to acting presidents.

“PDP is Bayelsa, and Bayelsa is PDP,” he said, adding that the party’s grassroots strength would help it “reclaim Creek Haven,” the official residence of the state governor in Yenagoa.
Turnah also praised Nyesom Wike whom he described as a factional leader within the party, for providing leadership, and commended the state governor, Douye Diri for maintaining what he called a safe political environment for all parties in the state.
He further acknowledged the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which monitored the congresses.
According to him, delegates from all 105 wards across Bayelsa attended their respective local government venues, suggesting active participation in the party’s internal democratic process.
In Ogbia, the newly elected PDP chairman, Ofoni Morgan, pledged to strengthen the party’s base in the area.
“Ogbia and Bayelsa State have always been loyal to PDP. We will do our best to ensure the party retrieves its mandate and takes back this state,” Morgan said.
