Rivers Assembly Says Impeachment of Fubara, Deputy Remains on Course

The Rivers State House of Assembly has insisted that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Nma Odu, are continuing in line with constitutional provisions, rejecting reports that the process has been halted as false.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Assembly said the impeachment formally commenced on Thursday, 8 January 2026, and is being conducted strictly under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The statement, signed by the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr Enemi Alabo George, said two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and the deputy governor had been prepared and duly forwarded to them by the Speaker.

According to the House, it is now awaiting their formal responses, as required by law, before moving to the next stages of the process.

The Assembly maintained that the exercise falls squarely within its constitutional mandate, stated that it is empowered to act on behalf of the people to check infractions and ensure compliance with constitutional governance by the executive.

As we all know, it is the House of Assembly that is empowered by the Constitution to stand by the people and stop infractions of the Constitution by the governor, deputy governor or any other officer of the Rivers State Government,” the statement said.

George also criticised what he described as deliberate attempts by some individuals and media platforms to misinform the public, particularly claims circulating on social media that the impeachment had been suspended or abandoned.

We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are again misinforming the public to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued. These are false narratives designed to mislead the public and cause disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.

He urged the public to disregard such reports, stressing that the impeachment process remains active and on track under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt Hon Martin Chike Amaewhule.

The lawmaker added that the House would not be intimidated or distracted by what he called blackmail, threats or external pressure, insisting that legislators remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The Assembly, however, thanked the people of Rivers State for their prayers, support and encouragement since the process began, and acknowledged the engagement of stakeholders and leaders at all levels.

It also extended greetings to what it described as democrats who believe in the Nigerian project.
