Panic as Gas Explosion Rocks Ogun Industrial Free Trade Zone

Panic swept through the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in the Igbesa area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area on Sunday morning after a gas explosion triggered a fire inside the industrial park.

The incident occurred at about 8.00am in the mattress production section of the zone, where a gas cylinder reportedly exploded, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air.

It was said that the smoke spread rapidly to nearby residential buildings in the host community, including student lodgings close to the scene, prompting many occupants to flee.

Witnesses said the blast was loud enough to be heard across the area, causing alarm among workers and students who initially feared a larger industrial accident.

Before emergency responders arrived, some buildings adjacent to the foam-producing factory were said to have been gutted by the fire.

Details of the damage and any possible casualties were still unclear hours after the incident.

Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Command said the fire had been brought under control and that calm had returned to the area.

In a brief statement shared on social media, the police spokesperson, Mr Seyi Babaseyi, said the Divisional Police Officer in Igbesa was on the ground with police personnel, working alongside officers of the state emergency services to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Authorities did not disclose whether anyone was injured, while investigations into the cause of the explosion are expected to continue.
