Nigerian Army Lauds Bayelsa Govt over Welfare Support to Troops

The Nigerian Army has lauded the Bayelsa State Government for prioritising the welfare of its personnel, describing the move as critical to strengthening security and sustaining peace across the state.

The commendation was given by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, during the official handover of newly constructed residential quarters to the Nigerian Army’s 16 Brigade in Elebele, Yenagoa Local Government Area (LGA).

Lt Gen Shaibu was in Bayelsa on an official visit that began at the Government House in Yenagoa, where he met with Governor Douye Diri.

The Army chief paid a condolence visit following the recent death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

From the Government House, Governor Diri and the Chief of Army Staff proceeded to Elebele for the inauguration and formal handover of the housing project, which was constructed by the Bayelsa State Government for officers and men of the 16 Brigade.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shaibu commended the state government for its sustained support to the military, saying that the new accommodation would greatly boost morale while easing longstanding housing challenges within the brigade.

He said improved welfare for troops remained essential to operational effectiveness and stability in the Niger Delta region.

Governor Diri said the housing initiative formed part of his administration’s broader strategy to enhance security and protect lives and property across Bayelsa State.

He also acknowledged the role of the Nigerian Army in maintaining peace and supporting civil authorities.

The project consists of nine units of three-bedroom flats for commissioned officers, alongside two blocks containing nine units each of two-bedroom apartments for non-commissioned officers of the Nigerian Army.
