The Federal Government has dismissed recent reports suggesting that Nigerian scholarship students in Morocco have been abandoned, describing the claims as false, unfounded, and deliberately misleading.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, clarified that all students enrolled under the Bilateral Education Scholarship (BES) Programme before 2024 have received payments up to the 2024 budget year.
Alausa attributed any temporary delays in outstanding payments to fiscal constraints, which are being resolved through ongoing consultations between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.
According to him, no new bilateral scholarships were awarded in October 2025 or thereafter.
He warned that documents circulating online suggesting otherwise are fake and unauthorised, constituting a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and discredit government policy.
The Minister explained that the discontinuation of government-funded bilateral scholarships followed a policy review confirming that Nigeria now has adequate capacity within its universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to deliver programmes previously offered abroad.
As a result, he added, only scholarships fully funded by foreign governments are being supported, with all financial obligations covered by the host countries.
Despite this shift, the Federal Government reassured that students already enrolled under prior arrangements will continue to receive full support until they complete their studies.
Students wishing to return to Nigeria may do so by formally notifying the Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards, with the government covering travel expenses to facilitate a smooth reintegration into local institutions.
Alausa insisted that the reforms aim to eliminate inefficiencies and financial abuses in the scholarship system, particularly where overseas training had been provided for programmes already available domestically.
The administration, he maintained, remains committed to transparency, accountability, and prudent management of public resources.
The Ministry reiterated its dedication to the welfare of Nigerian students and firmly rejected any attempts to spread misinformation or undermine government initiatives designed to strengthen national educational capacity.
