Bayelsa to Bury Late Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo on 30 January


The remains of Bayelsa State’s late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, will be laid to rest on 30 January 2026, the state government has announced.

Governor Douye Diri disclosed the burial arrangements on Wednesday during the 179th State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at Government House in Yenagoa.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who died on 11 December 2025 at the age of 60, will be honoured with a four-day funeral programme beginning on 27 January.

According to the governor, the programme was agreed by a government-appointed committee working with the family and the Catholic Church, the committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Nimibofa Ayawei.

Activities will commence with sporting events on 27 January, reflecting the late deputy governor’s oversight role in the Ministry of Sports.

A Day of Tributes is scheduled for 28 January at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.

On 29 January, special valedictory sessions will be held in two phases, first at the State High Court Complex and later at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House.

The final rites will take place on 30 January with a requiem mass at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Ofoni community, Sagbama Local Government Area (LGA), followed by interment.

Meanwhile, Governor Diri also received two awards during the executive council meeting. 

The awards were presented by the Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, on behalf of the Rivers and Bayelsa branch of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, in recognition of exceptional leadership.

Bayelsa Acquires Two Aircraft for Commercial Operations

Bayelsa State has taken a major step towards boosting air travel and economic activity as it acquires two aircraft for commercial flight operations at the Bayelsa International Airport .
