Atiku's Son Defects to APC, Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid

Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged to work for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The defection was announced on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja, where Abubakar was formally received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside senior APC figures from the North-East.

Known simply as “Abba,” the younger Abubakar told party leaders and supporters that he had resigned from the PDP and aligned with the APC, describing the decision as historic and personal.

He said he was directing all coordinators and members of his political structure, the Haske Atiku Organisation founded in 2022, to immediately join the APC and mobilise support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party and my decision to join the APC. With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he said.

Welcoming him, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, said the defection was symbolic and far-reaching, suggesting what he described as a new phase of “politics without borders.”

Salihu said the APC was driven by ideology and policy direction, assuring Abubakar of full rights and equal opportunities within the party.

Senator Barau congratulated Abubakar for what he called a “bold, wise and principled decision,” saying the move was based on belief in President Tinubu’s leadership and reform agenda rather than family ties.

He added that Abubakar, who had been following political developments from the United States (US), was impressed by the administration’s reforms, prompting his return to Nigeria.

A presidential aide, Alhaji Mahmoud Abdullahi, also assured Abubakar of President Tinubu’s acceptance and backing within the party.

On behalf of the defecting group, the Kano State coordinator, Hon Mubarak Musa, said all political activities of the group would now be coordinated through Senator Barau, pledging to deliver support for the APC in 2027.

The event concluded with the formal renaming of Abubakar’s political structure from the Haske Atiku Organisation to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation.
