A former spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has forecast internal crisis and possible defections within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following its convention ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed warned that competing interests could fracture the party once a flagbearer emerges.
He gave the warning during his appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today
on Tuesday, saying that Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the most likely beneficiary of the ADC’s presidential ticket, a development he argued would leave other power blocs within the party marginalised.
“ADC will bleed after its convention because almost certainly Vice President Atiku Abubakar will get the ticket. When he does, some people will walk out,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed maintained that the party’s current composition, which includes several high-profile political figures, makes it vulnerable to internal strife as ambitions collide during the selection process.
He also turned his attention to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, suggesting that Obi’s political style may sit uneasily with a competitive party primary.
According to Baba-Ahmed, Obi appears reluctant to submit himself to a crowded contest, having previously benefited from consensus arrangements rather than open conventions.
“One of the reasons Peter Obi is saying, ‘I’m not here for number two, I’m not here for convention, I’m here to fly the flag,’ is that he has people who were initially whispering politely to him. Now they are telling him, ‘Join the queue. You’re not the only one with ambition here,'” he said.
Baba-Ahmed added that expectations of automatic endorsement could heighten tensions within the ADC as the party moves closer to choosing its presidential candidate.
