The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy from 2 January 2026, citing growing security threats linked to the misuse of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
In a statement on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the decision followed a review of current security challenges and was aimed at strengthening public safety nationwide.
Hundeyin clarified that there was never any court order restraining the police from enforcing existing laws regulating tinted glass on vehicles.
He explained that enforcement had earlier been suspended to allow motorists adequate time to regularise their documents and complete the registration process without undue pressure.
According to the police, recent intelligence and operational reports have shown an increase in criminal activities carried out using vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass, which enable offenders to conceal their identities.
The statement added that such vehicles have been linked to crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.
“In view of this disturbing trend, the Nigeria Police Force considers it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit as a proactive measure to protect lives and property,” the statement said.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured the public that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with the law.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law and continued cooperation with relevant stakeholders to enhance national security.
Motorists who require tinted glass have been advised to apply for the appropriate permit through approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet all regulatory requirements.
