US Envoy Warns of ‘Genocide Wearing the Mask of Chaos’ in Nigeria

The United States (US) Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Mike Waltz, has warned that the wave of killings targeting Christians in Nigeria amounts to "genocide wearing the mask of chaos."

Speaking on Tuesday at an event hosted by the US Mission to the UN, Mr Waltz said Christian communities were bearing a disproportionate share of the violence, with families shattered, clergy repeatedly assassinated and entire congregations attacked.

"We have an entire faith being erased, one bullet at a time, one torched Bible at a time," he said.

His comments were reinforced by Open Doors, an international Christian watchdog, which reported that violence once largely confined to the Muslim-majority North was now spreading into the Middle Belt and parts of the South.

The organisation cited escalating attacks by armed groups, including Fulani herders and Boko Haram factions, and noted that sexual violence against Christian women remained widespread.

However, the Nigerian government has strongly rejected allegations of systemic religious persecution.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, writing on social media, maintained that religious freedom "has been a core tenet of our collective identity," insisting that Nigeria "stands firmly against all forms of intolerance."

US officials have warned that persistent attacks and inadequate accountability could undermine international assistance unless stronger protections are put in place for at-risk communities.
