The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, and nine other senior members over what it described as persistent anti-party activities and conduct deemed injurious to the party's unity.
The decision was taken on Saturday at the party's national convention in Ibadan, where delegates from 17 states gathered at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba to decide the fate of the embattled members.
According to reports, the motion for their expulsion was moved by party chieftain Bode George, who accused the affected figures, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, of engaging in actions "inconsistent with the party’s collective interests," notably filing a series of lawsuits against the PDP.
The motion was seconded by the chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, before Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed put the matter to a vote.
Delegates unanimously endorsed the expulsion, bringing months of internal rancour to a head.
Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and National Chairman Umar Damagum were among the party heavyweights present.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, former Osun governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Gombe governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, and Board of Trustees chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara also attended the session.
Party officials say the decision is intended to stabilise the PDP ahead of future electoral contests, though the expulsions are expected to deepen tensions between reform-minded blocs and loyalists of the ousted members.
