NLNG, NCDMB Move to Strengthen Collaboration on Major Plant Revamp

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) have opened talks on a deeper partnership to support the planned overhaul of key operational facilities in Trains 1 to 6 of the NLNG plant on Bonny Island, Rivers State.

The discussions took place during last week’s Nigerian Content Stakeholders’ Retreat, hosted at NLNG’s operational base in Finima.

Both organisations described the engagement as a step towards improving asset performance and boosting long-term productivity.

NLNG’s General Manager, Production, Nnamdi Anowi, briefed stakeholders on the company’s “Accelerated Asset Intervention” (AAI) programme, which is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Anowi explained that the initiative would involve a comprehensive upgrade of the Trains and common facilities, adding that timely regulatory support from NCDMB would be crucial.

He said the revamp was designed to strengthen predictive maintenance and sustain “top-quartile reliability performance,” ensuring continued delivery of gas and value to Nigeria.

The goal is to retain NLNG’s position as the best company in the country,” he added.

Responding, NCDMB’s Executive Secretary, Engr Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by the Director of Capacity Building, Engr Abayomi Bamidele, pledged the Board’s support, revealing that NLNG and NCDMB had a long record of successful collaboration, including the industry’s first Service Level Agreement (SLA) between a regulator and an operator.

He recalled that the Board granted accelerated approvals that enabled NLNG’s Train 7 Project to commence in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside fast-tracked approvals for new gas projects supplying feedstock to the facility.

Ogbe also urged NLNG to maximise Nigerian content in the upcoming intervention packages, in line with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.

At the Award Gala Dinner marking the close of the retreat, Ogbe commended NLNG for what he described as notable progress on Train 7, saying that the project currently employs thousands of workers and contributes meaningfully to the national economy.

Pioneer NCDMB Executive Secretary, Dr Ernest Nwapa, also lauded NLNG’s long-standing leadership in local content development, describing the company as an “early icon of Nigerian Content” due to its voluntary compliance over the years.

He asserted that NLNG conducted the industry’s first skills gap analysis, which helped guide policymakers and stakeholders on priority capacity-building areas.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards to organisations and individuals recognised for outstanding contributions to Nigerian content development.

Recipients included NCDMB (Nigerian Content Business Enabler Award); Promat Coating Limited (Train 7 Award for Local Manufacturing and Procurement); EVOMEC Global Services Limited and ARCO Worldwide Services (Overall Best Nigerian Content Compliant Contractor, technical and non-technical categories); and Sefam SGL Limited (Nigerian Content Diversity and Inclusion Award).
