ISWAP Claims Capture, Killing of Nigerian Brigade Commander in Borno

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for the capture and killing of a senior Nigerian Army officer, Brigade Commander M Uba, contradicting earlier assurances from the military that the commander was alive and safe.

In a statement published in Arabic through its propaganda outlet, Amaq, and reported by Premium Times, the terror group said its fighters ambushed the commander’s convoy along the Damboa–Biu road in Borno State before tracking him down after he allegedly fled the initial attack.

ISWAP also released photos purporting to show the commander in his office and later in captivity, with one image displaying his blood-stained military fatigues.

The group claimed that Uba was captured "after he had fled from the Wajiroko attack" and was found wounded near a nearby village where he was allegedly interrogated and executed shortly afterwards.

"Islamic State fighters overthrew a senior officer in the Nigerian army after a successful ambush on a military force in Borno," the statement read.

The Nigerian Army had earlier said Uba was safe, following confusion after the ambush on his team, but has not yet issued an updated response to ISWAP’s latest claims.

TheCable, citing Reuters, also reported that the group executed the senior officer after his capture during the ambush.

Further verification of the images and claims remains ongoing, as independent confirmation has not yet been established.
