The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered a ban on mobile phone use by junior staff at the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and the Department of Land Administration, effective immediately.
The directive, contained in an internal memo applies to all officers on Salary Grade Level 14 and below, according to SaharaReporters.
Affected staff are instructed not to bring mobile phones into the office premises from Wednesday, 12 November.
The memo, issued by AGIS Management, reads:
"DEAR AGIS/LANDS STAFF ON GRADE LEVEL 14 AND BELOW
"BAN ON USE OF MOBILE PHONES WITHIN THE OFFICE PREMISES FOR OFFICERS ON SALARY GRADE LEVEL 14 AND BELOW
"This is to inform all staff of AGIS and Department of Land Administration that with effect from Wednesday, 12th November, 2025, there shall be a ban on the use of mobile phones within the office premises for all officers on Salary Grade Level (SGL) 14 and below.
"For the avoidance of doubt, affected staff are not permitted to enter the premises with their mobile phones henceforth.
"All concerned officers are hereby advised to comply strictly and be guided accordingly.
"Thank you.
"Management."
The timing of the ban has drawn attention, coming barely a day after Wike’s public confrontation with naval personnel at a disputed site in Gaduwa District.
Footage of the incident, which circulated widely online, is believed to have been recorded by bystanders using mobile devices.
While no official link has been made between the two events, the sudden restriction has prompted speculation about efforts to limit unauthorised recordings within government offices.
More details to come...
