At least 25 schoolgirls have been abducted and a vice principal killed after armed bandits raided a secondary school in Kebbi State on Sunday night, in one of the latest attacks targeting educational institutions in northern Nigeria.
The attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, located in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area (LGA), operating unchallenged as they seized students and unleashed chaos across the community.
Witnesses said the school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, was shot dead while attempting to shield pupils from the gunmen.
Residents described scenes of panic as the bandits moved through the school compound, forcing terrified students into the night.
Community members have since been offering prayers for Makuku, regarded locally as a dedicated educator.
Tributes have poured in, calling on God to grant him mercy and comfort his bereaved family.
The Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed that 25 students were taken in the attack.
Abubakar said efforts were under way to determine the exact number of those missing and to coordinate a response with other security agencies.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida has been dispatched to the school to assess the situation, as the governor is currently out of the state.
"The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns at any moment from now," he said.
Parents and residents remain anxiously gathered in the community, awaiting official updates on the fate of the abducted girls as security forces intensify their search.
The attack adds to a growing list of school kidnappings that have plagued northern Nigeria over the past decade.
In 2021, 317 girls were taken from the Government Girls Science Secondary School in Jangebe, Zamfara State.
That same month, gunmen abducted students, teachers and family members from Government Science College, Kagara, in Niger State.
Months earlier, more than 300 boys were kidnapped from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
In 2018, Boko Haram seized 110 girls from the Government Girls Science Technical College in Dapchi, while the 2014 abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok sparked global outrage and remains one of Nigeria’s most notorious mass kidnappings.
