Army Denies Claim of Forced Recruitment Plan

The Nigerian Army has denied a viral online claim alleging that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, planned to forcibly recruit Nigerians aged 18 and above into military service.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt-Col Appolonia Anele, described the publication as a “malicious fabrication” aimed at misleading the public and inciting unnecessary fear.

The viral post had claimed that the Army Chief threatened compulsory conscription for youths who refused to enlist voluntarily.

It also alleged that 10,000 soldiers recruited in the previous year had gone missing.

Anele said the reports were entirely false, stressing that Lt-Gen Shaibu had never made such statements in any forum.

She cautioned individuals and groups circulating inciting misinformation to desist, warning that those responsible would be tracked, arrested and prosecuted.

The Army urged the public to disregard the rumour and rely solely on verified official communication channels for accurate information.
