Tinubu Meets New Military Chiefs Amid Youth Coalition’s Ultimatum on NSA Review

President Bola Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs at the State House in Abuja, indicating his first official engagement with the fresh military leadership.

The meeting came just three days after the appointments were announced, suggesting a swift move to recalibrate the country’s security apparatus.

Recall that the Presidency described the reshuffle as a strategic realignment aimed at enhancing professionalism, boosting troop morale, and fostering stronger inter-agency coordination in national security operations.

In attendance were General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General Waheedi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke, Chief of Air Staff; and Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye, who retained his role as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

While the specifics of the President’s directives remain undisclosed, sources within Aso Villa revealed that the discussions centered on counter-terrorism strategies, national security priorities, and efforts to sustain peace across Nigeria.

Coinciding with the high-level meeting, the Coalition of Northeast Youth Group Leaders issued a seven-day ultimatum to President Tinubu, urging a comprehensive review of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Mohammed Adamu, chairman of the coalition, praised Tinubu’s decision to replace the service chiefs, calling it a bold step toward reform.

However, Adamu stressed that the shake-up would be incomplete without scrutinizing the NSA’s operations, which the group accused of inefficiency and poor coordination.

"The dismissal of the service chiefs demonstrates the President’s firm commitment to restructure the national security architecture and reposition the armed forces on a foundation of professionalism, loyalty and renewed public confidence.

"However, we believe the President’s mission of renewal and accountability remains incomplete without a broader assessment of the national security leadership, particularly the ONSA

"We, therefore, call for a review of the performance, structure and coordination mechanisms under the NSA to ensure that the reforms achieve their intended results," he said.
