Super Falcons Qualify for 2026 WAFCON After Draw with Benin Republic

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have booked their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 1–1 draw with the Benin Republic at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, on Tuesday.

The nine-time African champions advanced 3–1 on aggregate, having secured a 2–0 victory in the first leg of the final qualifying round.

Head coach Justine Madugu made a single change to his starting lineup from the previous encounter, handing star forward Asisat Oshoala a starting berth in place of Chiwendu Ihezuo.

Nigeria began the match on the front foot, dominating possession and pressing the visitors deep into their own half.

Their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute when defender Ashleigh Plumptre rose highest to head home Esther Okoronkwo’s well-delivered corner, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

Despite several opportunities to extend their advantage before halftime, the Super Falcons could not convert their chances.

Benin Republic grew in confidence after the break and were rewarded in the 61st minute when Yasminath Djibril found the equaliser.

The result was enough to see Nigeria through to the continental showpiece, which will be hosted by Morocco from 17 March to 3 April 2026.
