Sowore Meets Jonathan, Seeks Joint Push for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has revealed that he met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday, seeking support for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement, Sowore said the meeting focused on the prolonged detention of Kanu and the need for a just resolution, adding that Jonathan acknowledged the urgency of the matter and expressed readiness to intervene.

"President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. He also promised to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to discuss the issue," he said.

Jonathan’s involvement adds to a growing chorus of national figures calling for Kanu’s release. Others who have publicly backed the move include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and former senator Shehu Sani.

Sowore argued that Kanu’s continued detention is unjust, stating that he is being punished for raising long-standing issues of marginalisation.

He insisted that, like other politically motivated cases that have been withdrawn, Kanu’s case should be resolved in the interest of national healing.

The activist further called on leaders across political, ethnic, and religious lines, particularly from the South East, such as Peter Obi, Governors Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, and former Minister Obiageli Ezekwesili, to join the campaign.

"Nnamdi Kanu should be set free," Sowore said, pledging to continue peaceful mobilisation for justice and freedom.
