The newly appointed service chiefs under President Bola Tinubu’s administration represent a blend of field experience, professional training, and leadership across Nigeria’s defence institutions.
Gen Olufemi Oluyede — Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)
Gen Olufemi Oluyede, from Ikere in Ekiti State, now serves as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Born in 1968, he is a member of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He previously commanded the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna, and was later appointed Chief of Army Staff in 2024, a position later confirmed by the Senate. Oluyede is recognised for his professional discipline and experience in operational planning.
Maj Gen Waidi Shaibu — Chief of Army Staff (CAS)
Maj Gen Waidi Shaibu, from Nasarawa State, has held several key field commands, including Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the military’s main counter-insurgency effort in the North-East.
His leadership contributed to the weakening of Boko Haram and Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP) networks, as well as the rehabilitation of surrendered fighters. He also served as General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Maiduguri.
Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke — Chief of Air Staff (CAS)
Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke was born in Makurdi, Benue State, and hails from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. A career pilot with over 4,300 flying hours, he belongs to the 40th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He holds degrees from the University of Calabar, Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Abuja, and the United States (US) Air War College, where he earned a Master’s in Strategic Studies. Aneke has held senior roles in logistics, operations, and flight safety and previously served as Deputy Commandant of the NDA.
Rear Admiral Idi Abbas — Chief of Naval Staff (CNS)
Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, from Kano State, has served in several leadership roles within the Nigerian Navy.
He was formerly Director of Operations at Naval Headquarters and later Chief of Naval Safety and Standards.
His career spans decades of operational and administrative service, with emphasis on safety oversight and maritime operations.
Maj Gen Emmanuel Undiendeye — Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI)
Maj Gen Emmanuel Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, from Bedia in Obudu Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State, continues as Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI)
A career intelligence officer, he is a former Commandant of the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre, where he specialised in peacekeeping and intelligence coordination.
Tinubu’s circular stated that the reshuffle is designed to bolster Nigeria’s national security, leveraging the capabilities of the incoming military leadership.
