A fresh leadership team has assumed control of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, pledging immediate reconciliation efforts to heal divisions within the party and launch a renewed membership drive aimed at attracting progressive elements.
The development comes in the wake of Governor Peter Mbah’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, along with several members of the state’s party executive.
Speaking after a high-powered meeting in Enugu, the new PDP leaders, joined by key stakeholders, described the governor’s defection as "cringeworthy" while acknowledging his constitutional right to join any political party.
A statement from the meeting, signed by PDP State Chairman Dr Godwin Udibe and Secretary Barr John Nwobodo, criticised Mbah for leaving the party’s structure in disarray.
"Notwithstanding the vacuum created by the governor’s exit, we make bold to state that there are more than enough able, competent, and progressive members poised to reposition the party and reclaim the governorship from Peter Mbah in 2027," the statement read.
The leaders insisted that the PDP remains a formidable political platform in Enugu, asserting that the defection of the governor, House of Assembly members, Executive Council members, Local Government Council Chairmen and Deputies, councillors, and other executives would not undermine the party’s influence in the state.
The meeting also commended the national PDP leadership for its ongoing restructuring efforts, particularly the preparations by the National Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintri.
They further welcomed the appointment of Senator Ben Ndi Obi as Secretary of the Committee, replacing Governor Mbah in that role.
"We especially commend the ongoing preparations by the National Convention Organising Committee led by the Adamawa State Governor, His Excellency, Umaru Fintri, for their steadfast commitment to organising a successful National Convention.
"Most importantly, we appreciate the PDP leadership for appointing Senator Ben Ndi Obi as Secretary, PDP National Convention Organising Committee to replace Governor Peter Mbah, the erstwhile Secretary of the Committee," the statement added.
