The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the disbursement of N28 billion to Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) for the procurement's and installation of meters for unmetered customers in Bands A and B.
According to an order issued by the Commission, the funds will be drawn from the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) and allocated to DisCos in proportion to their contributions under Tranche B of the intervention scheme.
NERC revealed that all meters acquired through this initiative must be provided free of charge to eligible Band A and B customers, reiterating that no customer within these tariff categories should be asked to pay for meters covered under the fund.
The Commission directed all DisCos to ensure the completion of meter installations under this tranche by 31 December 2025, warning that any delays or non-compliance will not be tolerated.
This intervention, NERC explained, forms part of its wider strategy to eliminate the persistent metering gap across the country.
It will run concurrently with other ongoing initiatives, including the Presidential Metering Initiative, aimed at enhancing transparency in billing and reducing estimated billing disputes between consumers and electricity providers.
