The Bayelsa Media Awards (BMA) 2025 celebrated outstanding contributions in journalism and broadcasting on Thursday during its 12th edition held at the Lady Daima Memorial Event Centre in Yenagoa.
The event, themed "Bayelsa First: Promoting Culture, Driving Investment Through Media," underscored the critical role of the media in promoting cultural identity and fostering public engagement.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Douye Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo applauded media professionals for their commitment to accurate reportage and their influence in strengthening public understanding.
Diri urged practitioners to uphold ethical standards as gatekeepers of information and shapers of public perception.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Barclay Ayakoroma explained the importance of culture, particularly language and cuisine, as unifying elements, saying that promoting local art forms, especially Ijaw music, through media channels was vital to gaining wider recognition.
Founder and Project Manager of the Bayelsa Media Awards, Mr Victor Binawari, acknowledged long-standing sponsors for their continued support, particularly praising institutions that have consistently backed categories such as Reporter of the Year, Newscaster of the Year and News Editor of the Year.
