India Secures 2030 Commonwealth Games Host Ahead of Nigeria’s Bid

India has been selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, beating Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, in a closely contested bid for the centenary edition of the global event.

The Commonwealth Sport Federation on Wednesday revealed Ahmedabad, in western India, as the recommended host city, pending final ratification at the General Assembly scheduled for 26 November in Glasgow.

If approved, this will be India’s second time hosting the Games, following Delhi’s edition in 2010.

Ahmedabad, a rapidly expanding metropolis with a population of over five million, boasts world-class sporting infrastructure, notably the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Being the largest stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 132,000, the Narendra Modi Stadium hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final.

"We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth," said Dr P.T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India.

The 2030 Games will mark the 100th anniversary of the competition, first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.

Final confirmation of Ahmedabad’s host status is expected once member nations vote later this year.
