The much-publicised wedding between popular Kano-based TikTok personalities Idris Mai Wushirya and his dwarf partner, Bashira ‘Yar Guda, has been cancelled by the Kano State Hisbah Board.
The board announced the decision after concluding that the supposed romantic relationship between the two was a deceptive arrangement intended to escape legal sanctions for previous offences.
Confirming the development, Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, said the investigation revealed that the pair’s relationship lacked sincerity and was merely a strategy to evade justice.
"After our investigation, we discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual understanding but rather an attempt to evade legal consequences. The board, therefore, resolved to cancel the wedding to prevent future conflict," he said.
Dr Aminuddeen explained that although both individuals had undergone medical testing to determine compatibility, the process was discontinued to avoid further complications, adding that the case would be returned to court if reconciliation efforts fail.
The development follows earlier court proceedings before Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano Magistrate Court, where both Wushirya and ‘Yar Guda faced charges of immoral conduct filed by the Kano State Censorship Board which stemmed from a viral video shared on Wushirya’s social media page.
During the hearing, the duo declared their love for each other and expressed their intention to marry.
Consequently, the court deferred its ruling and referred the matter to the Hisbah Board to formalise the marriage in line with Islamic customs, granting the board a 60-day timeframe to complete the arrangements.
However, the decision drew public criticism, with many accusing the court of endorsing a forced marriage.
In response, the Kano State Judiciary dismissed the claim, insisting that the court merely offered the couple an opportunity to validate their claim of being in love.
Speaking to The Guardian, judiciary spokesperson Baba Jibo clarified that Magistrate Wali never ordered a forced marriage, describing such reports as misleading.
"What the court did was to suspend its ruling and, for the sake of fairness, refer the two TikTokers to Hisbah to formalise their marriage.
"The opportunity was granted after the defendants claimed they were lovers and said the viral pictures were their pre-wedding photos," Jibo said.
He further explained that during proceedings, Bashira 'Yar Guda stated she would only marry Idris if he provided his own accommodation, not a rented apartment.
